Windscreens
Outdoor Windscreens Chicago for Restaurant Patios, Rooftops, and Decks
Wind empties a Chicago patio long before the temperature does, and a licensed sidewalk café cannot be fully enclosed to fix it. SignFreaks designs the windscreen to stay on the right side of that line, files the permits, builds it in our own shop, and installs it.
- Fixed or removable builds
- Sunbrella canvas or Patio500 vinyl
- Galvanized steel or aluminum frames

- Design, permit, build, install
- Own shop, own crew, own lift
- Seasonal removal and storage
- One company, fully accountable
The problem
Wind, not temperature, is what closes a Chicago patio
What restaurants and cafés tell us before we start, and what we do about it.
What usually goes wrong
- The patio is comfortable in still air and empty once the wind picks up.
- Heaters run and lose, because the wind carries the heat away.
- A full enclosure costs more than needed and may not be allowed.
- Open sides leave guests exposed to gusts, street noise, and passers-by.
How SignFreaks handles it
- Screens where it blows. Panels go on the exposed sides, often one or two of the four.
- Seated height. The wind is stopped where it reaches your guests.
- Right-sized. A partial build that stays on the right side of the enclosure line.
- Privacy and quiet. Solid or clear panels cut the noise and the view from the street.
Screen options

SignFreaks builds every windscreen to order, and these are the six choices that shape it.

Removable screens
Engineered to come down for the summer and go back up in fall, with storage if you need it.
Retractable screens
Panels that roll away when the wind drops, for patios that want to be fully open.
Clear vinyl panels
Patio500 vinyl that stops the wind and keeps the view of the street and the skyline.
Solid and branded panels
Sunbrella canvas with your colors or printed graphics, for privacy and a name on the street.
Height and anchoring
Set to seated height, then fixed or free-standing, depending on what the site allows.
Compare
How far should a patio be shielded?
Windscreens sit between doing nothing and a full enclosure, and each step adds approvals.
| Option | Effect | Approval |
|---|---|---|
| No screens | Patio closes when the wind picks up | None |
| Partial screens | Cuts wind on the exposed sides | Public Way Use permit on the sidewalk |
| Full-height screens | Stops most of the wind | May start to count as an enclosure |
| Screens plus roof | Wind and rain | Building permit |
| Full enclosure | All weather | Not allowed on a licensed sidewalk café |

How it works
How an outdoor windscreen in Chicago goes from wind to patio
Each SignFreaks windscreen follows the same six steps, from the first walk-through to the seasons after.
On-site evaluation
We assess the wind exposure, the layout, the noise, and how the patio is used before we draw.
Custom design
The design sets height, panel type, and colors, with branding, graphics, or solid panels for privacy.
Permits
We prepare the drawings and file what the site requires, so nothing is built before approval.
Fabrication
Marine-grade canvas or vinyl goes onto a galvanized steel or aluminum frame built in our own shop.
Installation
Our crew mounts it with wind-tested brackets and checks the fit and the anchoring before we leave.
Seasonal service
We offer storage, repair, and recovery, and removable screens come down and go back up each year.
Approvals
What an outdoor windscreen in Chicago has to pass first
Windscreens are the lightest-touch way to extend a season, but the site still decides which approvals apply.
A free-standing screen on private property is the simplest case. On a sidewalk, the café’s license and the Public Way Use permit govern, and the line to watch is enclosure, and the design is checked against it from the start: a licensed café may have a partial enclosure but never a complete one, so height and the number of sides are chosen with that limit in mind.
SignFreaks prepares the drawings and files the permits, then builds the windscreen and completes the installation, so the approvals and the build stay with one company.
Public Way Use permit
Screens on, over, or under the sidewalk need one, renewed through the city’s portal.
Outdoor seating rules
A café’s license can limit height, require removable screens, or restrict anchoring.
Building permit
Screens fixed to a building, or topped with a roof, go to the Department of Buildings.
The enclosure line
Add enough height and sides and the space counts as enclosed, which a café cannot be.
Beyond the screen
When wind is not the only problem
If the patio also needs a roof or walls, these builds come from the same shop.
Outdoor café vestibules
Shelter for café seating that keeps guests out of the wind, rain, and snow while they eat.

Budget
What moves the price of outdoor windscreens in Chicago
The cost drivers for an outdoor windscreen come first, roughly in the order they matter.
We do not publish price lists, because a number without your size, site, and deadline attached would be fiction. Give us those three and you get a real written quote.
- Total run length of the screens and the height they need to reach.
- Canvas or vinyl panels, clear or solid, and the framing system behind them.
- Fixed, removable, or retractable, since movement adds hardware.
- How the screens are anchored, and whether the site allows drilling.
- Branding, printed graphics, or custom colors on the panels.
- Permit drawings, public way approval, and storage between seasons.

Questions we get asked
Do outdoor windscreens really extend the patio season in Chicago?
Outdoor windscreens extend the patio season in Chicago because wind usually closes a patio before the temperature does. Stopping it at seated height makes a noticeable difference, and it keeps heat from being carried away. For a patio that also needs a roof, see a canopy patio enclosure.
Do I need a permit for outdoor windscreens in Chicago?
Outdoor windscreens in Chicago may need a permit, depending on the site. Screens on, over, or under the sidewalk need a Public Way Use permit, and screens fixed to a building or topped with a roof go through the Department of Buildings. SignFreaks prepares the drawings and files the permits.
Can a licensed sidewalk café use windscreens?
A licensed sidewalk café can use windscreens as long as the space is not completely enclosed, because Chicago allows a partial enclosure and overhead cover but never a full one. We choose the height and the number of sides with that limit in mind, and our outdoor café vestibule page covers café shelters in more detail.
What are commercial windscreens made of?
Commercial windscreens are made of marine-grade Sunbrella canvas or Patio500 vinyl over a galvanized steel or aluminum frame. The materials are chosen for Chicago’s wind, rain, snow, and sun, and a worn panel can be replaced through sign repair.
Can windscreens come down in the summer?
Windscreens can come down in the summer when they are built for it, and we engineer removable and retractable systems for easy storage and reinstallation in fall. A site whose license requires removable screens is designed that way from the start, and a screen can be taken down for good through sign removal.
How high can an outdoor windscreen be?
An outdoor windscreen is usually set to seated height plus a margin, because that is the wind that reaches guests. Higher screens block more but start to enclose the space, which can change how the city treats it, so we keep the design on the right side of that line when we file the permits.
Should I choose clear vinyl or solid panels?
Clear Patio500 vinyl keeps the view and the sightlines to the street, which helps passing trade, and solid Sunbrella canvas gives privacy and shelter from a busy road. Many patios use solid panels on the street side and clear vinyl elsewhere, and either can carry your branding, including channel letters nearby.
Can outdoor windscreens carry our branding?
Outdoor windscreens can carry your branding through custom colors, printed graphics, and fully covered panels. Our patio awnings and entrance builds follow the same design, so the whole frontage matches.
How much do outdoor windscreens cost in Chicago?
Outdoor windscreens in Chicago cost what their length, height, panels, frame, anchoring, branding, and permit work add up to, so the number comes from a written quote rather than a range. Send a photo, a rough size, and your deadline, and the quote lists every cost, including the installation.
