Custom School Signs Chicago
Campus identity, entrance signage and wayfinding that gets a visitor to the right door. Usually on a summer schedule and a public budget, both of which we plan around.

- Licensed Chicago sign contractor
- Permits and drawings handled
- Built in our own shop
- Installed by our own crew
The brief
Campuses are hard to navigate by design
What this sector runs into, and how we deal with it.
What usually goes wrong
- Visitors cannot tell which entrance they are supposed to use, which is a safeguarding problem before it is a signage one.
- Buildings have been added over decades and the signage does not match between them.
- Work can only happen in a narrow window when students are not on site.
How SignFreaks handles it
- Clear direction to the designated visitor entrance, starting from the road rather than the car park.
- One identity system applied across buildings of different ages.
- Scheduling built around the summer window, with permits and fabrication done in advance of it.
The package

Each of these has its own page with materials, options and the approval path.

Compliance
What schools have to account for
The constraints that shape the design before anyone opens a drawing.
We check which of these apply to your specific site, then design inside them. More on how we handle approvals is on the sign permit page.
- Permanent room identification generally has accessibility requirements, and on a campus that means a consistent approach across a lot of doors.
- Visitor routing to a single controlled entrance is a safeguarding requirement in most districts and shapes the whole exterior scheme.
- Public procurement can require formal quotations, specific documentation and particular insurance evidence.
- Installation windows are usually restricted to holidays, which makes the permit and fabrication schedule critical rather than flexible.
- Materials in accessible areas need to tolerate contact and cleaning, which affects edge details and fixing methods.

Questions from this sector
Can you work to a summer schedule?
Yes, and it is how most of this work runs. The important thing is starting early enough that permits and fabrication are complete before the window opens — the window is for installation, and trying to do the approvals inside it is what causes projects to slip a year.
How do we direct visitors to one entrance?
Sign the route from the road, not from the car park. Most campuses have good signage at the door and nothing at the point where a driver has to decide which way to turn. Getting that first decision right does more than anything at the building itself.
Do you handle procurement paperwork?
Yes. Formal quotations, insurance certificates and the documentation districts typically require are all normal for us. Tell us what your process needs and we will provide it in the form you need it.
What about accessibility inside?
Permanent room identification generally needs tactile characters and braille, with requirements on contrast, character size and mounting height. On a campus the practical challenge is consistency across a lot of doors added at different times, which is why we specify it as a system.
Can signage be updated as buildings are renovated?
That is usually the sensible approach on a public budget. We set the specification once, then apply it building by building as work happens. Each phase looks like part of the whole rather than a separate project.
