Commercial Business Signs Chicago
Retail and service businesses where the sign is most of the marketing budget. It has to be found from the street, read in a second, and look like you intend to still be here next year.
- Storefront identity
- Window and interior
- Multi-site consistency
- Licensed Chicago sign contractor
- Permits and drawings handled
- Built in our own shop
- Installed by our own crew
The brief
When the sign is the marketing
What this sector runs into, and how we deal with it.
What usually goes wrong
- Customers phone to say they drove past twice and could not find you.
- The unit looked better before the previous tenant’s sign came down.
- You have three locations and all three look like different businesses.
How SignFreaks handles it
- Letter height worked back from the actual viewing distance rather than from the space available.
- A frontage treated as one thing — sign, awning, window graphics — instead of three decisions made separately.
- One specification applied across sites, so the second and third locations reinforce the first.

Compliance
The rules that catch small businesses out
The constraints that shape the design before anyone opens a drawing.
We check which of these apply to your specific site, then design inside them. More on how we handle approvals is on the sign permit page.
- Permitted sign area is usually tied to your frontage width, and it is shared across everything on the facade rather than allocated per sign.
- Window graphics frequently count towards that total, and many municipalities also cap what percentage of the glazing may be covered.
- Replacing an existing sign is rarely automatically exempt from permitting, and an older sign may be larger than current rules would allow.
- Temporary signage — banners, A-boards, feather flags — is regulated separately and often time-limited.
- In a leased unit the landlord’s criteria document usually applies on top of the municipal code, and is often stricter.

Questions from this sector
How big can my sign be?
It is normally worked out from your frontage width and set by the local ordinance, and the allowance covers everything on the facade rather than each sign separately. We measure the frontage and check the current rule for your address before proposing a size.
Lit or unlit?
Lit if you trade after dark or in winter afternoons, which in Chicago is most retail. An unlit sign disappears at exactly the hours people are walking home past you. If the budget will not stretch now, design for lighting to be added rather than ruling it out.
Can I put a sign up without a permit?
For anything permanent and exterior, almost certainly not, and the consequences of trying range from a notice to being told to take it down. Temporary banners have their own rules, usually with duration limits. It is cheaper to ask first.
What if I am only leasing?
That is most of our customers. Two things to sort: what the landlord criteria allow, and what the lease says about reinstatement when you leave. A raceway-mounted sign makes far fewer wall penetrations than direct mount, which is worth knowing when the lease ends.
Can you match signage across several locations?
Yes, and it is worth doing properly. We work from one specification — colors, letter style, proportions, mounting — and adapt it to each frontage and each municipality, so the sites read as one business without pretending every building is the same.
