The problem
The trouble with a fixed awning over a patio
What customers tell us before we start, and what we do about it.
What usually goes wrong
- A fixed structure over outdoor seating blocks light on the days you would rather have it.
- Anything permanent has to survive a Chicago winter it is not being used for.
- Sun moves through the day and a fixed awning only shades properly for part of it.
How SignFreaks handles it
- A cassette awning that extends when the sun is on the terrace and retracts when it is not.
- Retracted and protected through winter, which is most of the reason these outlast fixed covers.
- Motorised operation with sensors, so it responds without anyone having to remember.
What you get
What goes into a retractable
The parts that matter, and why each one is specified the way it is.

Cassette
A housing that encloses the folded fabric and the arms. Full cassette protects both; semi-cassette is cheaper and shelters less.

Folding arms
Tensioned arms that hold the fabric flat when extended. The component that decides how wide a single unit can go.

Motor
Tubular motor with a remote, wall switch, or building-system integration. Manual crank remains an option on smaller units.
Wind sensor
Retracts automatically above a set wind speed. Worth having, since wind is what destroys retractable awnings.
Sun sensor
Extends when the sun reaches a threshold, which keeps a terrace usable without anyone managing it.
Fabric
Solution-dyed acrylic in solid colors or stripes, with graphics on the valance where wanted.

| Type | Protection when retracted | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Full cassette | Fabric and arms fully enclosed | Exposed positions, year-round installations |
| Semi-cassette | Fabric covered, arms partly exposed | Sheltered walls, budget-conscious jobs |
| Open | Fabric exposed on the roller | Covered positions only |

Approvals
Permits and what to expect
The part of the job most likely to move your timeline.
A retractable awning is still a structure fixed to the building and usually needs a permit, particularly where it extends over a sidewalk or a public seating area. Some municipalities treat retractables more leniently than fixed structures precisely because they can be withdrawn; others do not distinguish. The wall fixing is the critical detail — the loads from an extended awning in a gust are considerable and go straight into the anchors.
We handle the drawings and the filing as part of the job. There is more detail on our sign permit page.

- Width and projection, with wider units needing heavier arms or a coupled installation.
- Full, semi or open cassette.
- Motorised against manual, and which sensors are specified.
- Fabric grade and any printed graphics.
- Wall construction and whether reinforcement is needed to carry the load.

Questions we get asked
How much wind can it take extended?
Less than people assume, which is why the wind sensor matters. Manufacturers give a rating for each model, and the sensible operating practice is to retract in gusty conditions. An awning left out in a storm is the most common way these get damaged.
Should I leave it out over winter?
No. The main advantage of a retractable is that it spends the worst months folded into its cassette, out of ice and snow. Left extended through a Chicago winter it will not last, and the damage is usually structural rather than to the fabric.
Manual or motorised?
Motorised for anything commercial and anything wide — a manual crank on a large awning is a chore nobody does reliably, and an awning that stays retracted because extending it is a nuisance is wasted money.
Can it carry our branding?
Yes, usually on the valance so it is visible whether extended or not. Graphics on the main fabric only show when it is out, which suits some businesses and not others.
How wide can a single awning be?
Depends on the model and the arm system, and beyond a certain span the answer is to couple two units under a shared cassette rather than push one. We size it from the actual opening rather than fitting the opening to a standard unit.
