SEG Lightbox Signs Chicago

Silicone edge graphics: a printed fabric face tensioned into a slim aluminum frame with a silicone bead. Even backlighting, no visible fixings, and a graphic change that takes minutes.

The problem

Where SEG beats a rigid cabinet

What customers tell us before we start, and what we do about it.

What usually goes wrong

  • Your graphics change seasonally and replacing a rigid face each time is slow and wasteful.
  • A conventional cabinet looks bulky in a fitted-out retail or exhibition space.
  • Shipping rigid panels between sites damages them, and storage takes real space.

How SignFreaks handles it

  • A fabric graphic that rolls into a tube, ships in a small box and tensions back perfectly flat.
  • A slim frame with the graphic running to the edge, so the lit panel reads as a surface rather than a box.
  • Face changes done in-house by your own staff, without tools and without a service call.

What you get

How an SEG lightbox works

The parts that matter, and why each one is specified the way it is.

  • Commercial Patio Awnings Chicago, built and installed by SignFreaks

    Frame

Extruded aluminum with a channel around the perimeter. Available in depths from very slim wall profiles to freestanding double-sided.

  • Pylon Monument Signs Chicago, built and installed by SignFreaks

    Fabric graphic

Dye-sublimation printed polyester with a silicone strip stitched around the edge, which is what tensions it into the channel.

  • Entrance Canopies Chicago, built and installed by SignFreaks

    Backlighting

Edge-lit LED with a diffuser, or direct LED for deeper frames. Even across the whole face, which is the main appeal.

  • Mounting

Wall mounted, recessed into a wall, hung, or freestanding on a base.

  • Single or double sided

Double-sided frames take a graphic each side and suit hanging and freestanding positions.

  • Graphic changes

Push the silicone bead out of the channel, roll the old graphic, tension the new one in. No tools.

Approvals

Permits and what to expect

The part of the job most likely to move your timeline.

SEG is overwhelmingly an interior product, which usually means no sign permit and a short path from artwork to installed. Where it is used outdoors it needs a weather-rated frame and a fabric specified for it, and then the usual sign approvals apply. For interior retail fit-outs the constraint is normally the landlord criteria rather than the municipality.

We handle the drawings and the filing as part of the job. There is more detail on our sign permit page.

Budget

What moves the price

Roughly in the order they matter.

We do not publish price lists, because a number without your size, site and deadline attached would be fiction. Give us those three and you get a real quote.

  • Frame size and depth, and whether it is single or double sided.
  • Whether it is backlit or a non-lit tension frame.
  • Mounting method, with recessed installations needing coordination with the wall build.
  • Number of spare graphics ordered, which are inexpensive alongside the frame.
  • Indoor against outdoor specification.

Questions we get asked

How quickly can graphics be changed?

A small frame takes a couple of minutes: ease the silicone bead out of the channel, roll the old graphic away, work the new one in from the corners. Larger frames need two people but the method is the same, and no tools are involved.

Does the fabric crease?

It can crease in storage, and the tension pulls most of it out once it is fitted. Rolling rather than folding avoids the problem almost entirely, which is why graphics ship in tubes.

Is it as bright as an acrylic-faced cabinet?

Comparable, and usually more even. Fabric diffuses light well, so edge-lit SEG panels tend to show fewer hot spots than a shallow rigid cabinet with widely spaced modules.

Can SEG be used outdoors?

With the right frame and fabric, yes, but it is not the default. Wind loading on a tensioned fabric face and UV on the print are both real considerations. For an exterior storefront we would normally recommend a rigid cabinet and explain the trade-off.

Can I order extra graphics up front?

Yes, and it is usually worth it. The frame is most of the cost; additional printed faces are comparatively inexpensive, and having next season already on the shelf removes the lead time entirely.
